2022 – An Exceptional Year for Curaçao International Airport

CAP reports Passenger Traffic Movements Recovery 101% vs 2019

Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) is reporting a full-year recovery of passenger traffic movements of 101% compared to 2019, the benchmark year for reaching pre-pandemic traffic figures. Total Passenger Movements (all arriving and departing passengers through the airport) were 1,465,061 YE 2022, a recovery of 101% vs. YE 2019. International departing passengers in 2022 were 578,545 a recovery of 106% vs. 2019; Dutch Caribbean departing passengers in 2022, were 106,387 passengers, a recovery of 79% vs. 2019 and there were 695,191 arriving passengers in 2022 reflecting a 104% recovery vs. 2019.

2022 Fourth Quarter Overview
Since reopening for commercial passenger traffic in July 2022, CAP has measured growth by comparing quarterly results. During Q4 2022, there were 152,961 international departing passengers, a -2% decrease compared to Q3 2022. In Q4 2022 there were 33,602 passengers departing to the Dutch Caribbean, an +8% increase compared to Q3 2022. Arriving passengers in Q4 2022 were 201,962, a +7% increase compared to Q3 2022 and total passenger movements in Q4 2022 were 408,819, a +3% increase over Q3 2022.

During Q4 2022, the reopening of the Canadian borders for commercial passenger traffic in the latter part of 2022, prompted Air Canada and WestJet to restart their winter season flight schedules from Toronto and Montreal non-stop to Curaçao. The capacity challenges and schedule adjustments from Amsterdam, impacted KLM flight schedule. US passenger traffic continued to grow in Q4, stimulated in part by the Royal Sandals Curaçao opening in June 2022. In South America, the Colombian and the Brazilian market have shown a significant recovery in 2022. See graph 1.

2022 Passenger Traffic Distribution per region – Diversification
Passenger Traffic Diversification is one of CAP’s air service development principles. During the pandemic, and understandably so, our passenger traffic distribution was primary dominated by The Netherlands. With the gradual opening of other markets and restart of air service, the distribution of passenger traffic from different markets, mitigates dependency. A balanced market share distribution, that would consist of smaller share percentages and more passenger numbers avoids the risks of dependency on one major market.

In 2022, the European market share was 49%, a decrease of 9 points compared to 2021, North America, primarily the USA, a share of 18%, an increase of 4 points compared to 2021, the Dutch Caribbean 16%, a decrease of 1 point compared to 2021 and South America 12%, an increase of 5 points over 2021.

Recovery of 2022 passenger traffic per region compared to 2019 was Europe at 120%, The USA 103%, South America 93%, Canada 81%, and the Dutch Caribbean 79%. See graph 2.

2022 Airline Partners Performance
CAP is pleased with the overall performance of the airline partners servicing Curaçao throughout 2022. The following are the top producing airline partners based on passenger share and recovery vs 2019. See graph 3.

The overall average load factor (percentage of occupied seats per flight) in 2022 was 81%, a 1-point increase over the average load factor of 2019. According to Cirium data, there were a total of 20,478 scheduled flights arriving and departing from Curaçao, and a total capacity of 1,882,048 seats. Recovery of flights and seat capacity compared to 2019 were 92% and 99% respectively.

2022 Overview – Passenger Traffic Movements Recovered
CAP is pleased by the overall 2022 traffic figures as total passenger movements of 1,465,061 have surpassed 2019, a 101% recovery. In 2022 there were 571,680 international departing passengers an increase of +5% compared to 2019 and a recovery of 105%. 111,828 passengers departed to the Dutch Caribbean, a decrease of -21% compared to 2019 and a 79% recovery. There were 695,191 arriving passengers 2022, an increase of +4% compared to 2019 and a 104% recovery.

CAP remained with cautious optimism due to several uncertainties that could have impacted travel more aggressively. The lingering pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation, recessions, weakening value of the euro, US airline pilot and crew shortages and airport staffing challenges, that underlined the volatility of the economy and travel.

The containment of the Omicron virus impact on island made the impact minimal due to the efforts of the destination. Opening of borders and the restart of flight schedules by various airline partners and an increase in demand, contributed to the exceptional year end traffic results. The addition of 30% capacity to existing hotel room inventory further stimulated demand during the second semester of 2022.

2023 Outlook
IATA, International Air Transport Association, in its initial economic 2023 outlook indicates that ‘most of the headwinds from 2022 are likely to remain with us in 2023, though on the whole they may be unlikely to intensify.’ In addition, IATA cautions that ‘passenger price sensitivity has been low so far since travel has again been possible, though this can be expected to rise as economies slow and unemployment rates climb again.’ What could result in an upside in economic activity and air transportation, IATA believes would be an end to the war in Ukraine and an end to all travel restrictions.
ACI, Airports Council International, in its latest quarterly assessment analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, its effects on airports, and the path to recovery, indicates that ‘uncertainty still surrounds the recovery of the aviation industry, especially in the medium-term. Projecting the path to recovery at this point is still an exercise requiring prudence. The potential for an economic downturn and possible recession continues to increase in probability. Those risks could dampen or delay the recovery.

According to ACI, despite several headwinds, the baseline projections indicate that the industry will recover to 2019 levels by the end of 2023 or in early 2024. International travel is forecast to recover by 2024. ACI predicts that North, South and The Caribbean will be the first regions to reach full recovery compared to 2019 by the end of 2023. Global passenger traffic is expected to reach 2019 levels in late 2023 with the full-year recovery to 2019 levels in 2024.

Despite all the challenges, CAP is pleased that Curaçao has reached traffic recovery ahead of what both IATA and ACI are forecasting.

CAP is realistically optimistic in 2023, as the challenges in 2022 continue to be of concern and underscore the volatility of the economy and aviation industry. However, the addition of room inventory announced for 2023 including among others, the opening of a brand-new Marriott Courtyard and the second tower of Mangrove Beach Corendon Curaçao All-Inclusive Resort, Curio by Hilton are indications of further traffic growth in 2023. According to Cirium, subject to change, currently there are 24,240 scheduled flights filed (arriving and departing) in 2023, an increase of +18% over 2022. This translates into a total of 2,155,551 seat capacity in 2023, an increase of +15% over 2022.

CAP, in close partnership with the Curaçao Tourism Board and the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association, continues to ensure the retention, growth, and diversification of Curaçao’s route network.

CAP proud supporter of successful Curaçao Global Tourism Symposium 2022

Curaçao took center stage in the Caribbean this week by hosting a well-attended and very successful Global Tourism Symposium organized in partnership by the CTB and CHATA. Tour Operators, Wholesalers and Press members from North America, South America, Europe and the Caribbean were able to experience Curaçao, hold one-on-one meetings with hotel and tourism partners and enjoy networking during exceptional evening events.

Curaçao Airport Partners N.V. (CAP), a dedicated tourism partner, was pleased to be present and proud to support the Global Tourism Symposium together with one of our Food & Beverage partners, Bar22. CAP had the opportunity to share airport traffic updates, seat capacity per region and opportunities with the industry partners during the individual regional destination presentations.

The importance and timing of hosting the Global Tourism Symposium was perfect and the best way to showcase the positive and unique developments on-island that have a positive impact on the further development of tourism.

Curaçao International Airport – Passenger Traffic Review S1 2022

CONTINUED TRAFFIC RECOVERY DESPITE CHALLENGES

Curaçao International Airport’s first semester 2022 passenger traffic overview continues a positive trend on the path to recovery. Total Passenger Movements (all arriving and departing passengers through our terminal) were 657,339, a 91% recovery compared to year-to-date June 2019 movements. Seat capacity (in- and outbound) over the same first six (6) month period of 2022, was 888,063, a 90% recovery compared to year-to-date June 2019. The Netherlands continues to dominate the market with a 54% traffic share; Dutch Caribbean 16%; USA 13%; and South America 10%.

The possible negative impact of the Omicron variant in the beginning of the year resulted minimal. Pent up demand, the removal of strict entry requirements, the restart of service by the remaining pre-pandemic airline partners and strong bookings over the Easter and May Holidays in The Netherlands, contributed to the overall growth of passenger traffic through Curaçao International Airport.

Q2 2022 Traffic Results – May and June Traffic figures surpassed 2019 figures

Monthly traffic figures for Q2 2022 indicate an overall passenger traffic increase in April of +15% compared to March 2022. May traffic decreased by -10% compared to April 2022 and June traffic increased by +3% over May 2022. The average load factor (occupied seats per flights) for Q2 2022 was 84% compared to an average load factor of Q1 2022 of 75%, a growth of +9 points quarter over quarter. Monthly traffic recovery Q2 2022 compared to Q2 2019, was 104% for April; 98% for May and 104% for June 2022.

During Q2 2022, KLM reduced twice (2x) daily non-stop service from Amsterdam to daily after the May Holidays and resumed twice (2x) daily at the end of June 2022. Avianca increased to non-stop daily service from Bogota. Jetair launched twice (2x) weekly non-stop service to Paramaribo. Jetblue increased to trice (3x) weekly non-stop service from New York – JFK. Copa increased service from Panama City to five (5x) non-stop weekly flights. And with the restart of Caribbean Airlines with twice (2x) weekly non-stop service from Port-of-Spain, all pre-pandemic valued airline partners, have resumed service to Curaçao.

Curaçao Airport Partners NV, CAP, is pleased with the positive traffic results and anticipates a continued growth through the second semester 2022 but with cautious optimism. The pandemic impact thus far has been immediate with every variant. However, the war in Ukraine, inflation, cost of living, fuel and oil price increases, airfare increases, flight cancellations, airline and airport shortages of crew and personnel, the euro devaluation, will impact passenger traffic growth.

CAP continues to focus on retention, diversification, and growth of air service into Curaçao. This in close partnership with the Tourism Board and the Hospitality Tourism Association. The anticipated additional room inventory in 2022 by primarily well-known established US Brand names, including the recently opened Sandals Royal Curaçao, support the efforts to create additional demand for the destination.

Curaçao International Airport earns ACI Airport Customer Experience Accreditation

Willemstad, May 30, 2022 – Curaçao International Airport is proud to share that it has earned the ACI Airport Customer Experience, Level 1 accreditation — a fruitful result of continuous hard work by the organization to ensure the best experience for all passengers and visitors.

This is a multilevel accreditation program developed by Airports Council International (ACI) to guide towards achieving excellence in customer experience management. There are five levels of accreditation, from Level 1 to Level 5.

Level 1: Customer experience is one of our airport priorities that is communicated internally and externally. We have stablished a fundamental structure through understanding customer expectations, satisfaction, comments and complaints.

After receiving the ACI Health Accreditation and the prestigious recognition by the Airports Council International (ACI) in its World’s ‘Voice of the Customer’ initiative, both for the second time earlier this year, the airport can now add yet another accomplishment to the long list of achievements and recognitions.

“Notwithstanding any circumstances, customers experience remains one of our priorities. Without customers, an airport is just another empty building, and that is why we place them at the center of all we do, every operational decision must guarantee the best experience”, said Mr. Norman Gómez, Managing Director CAP.

The dedication of the entire airport community has been awarded through this important accreditation and we are already focusing on the next steps to achieve level 2 of this accreditation.

Curacao International Airport – Q1 2022 – Strong Recovery despite continued challenges

Curaçao International Airport’s first quarter positive traffic and recovery figures surpassed the forecast despite the negative Omicron virus spread in early 2022. Pent up demand and the easing of entry requirements supported the increase in passenger traffic. Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) retains cautious optimism for 2022 as the current positive trend is expected through Mid-May. Price escalation and the oil price volatility add additional pressure on top of the geopolitical challenges. During the pandemic, the impact of a virus variant has been immediate and reflected in traffic. However, the war in Ukraine could add additional challenges to a recovering volatile economy over a longer period.

Departing Traffic over Q1 continued to be led by The Netherlands with a 60% traffic share; USA 13%; Dutch Caribbean 13% and South America 9%. Monthly traffic figures for Q1 22 indicate an overall passenger traffic increase in January by +18% compared to December 2021. February traffic increased by +22% compared to January 2022 and March traffic increased by +3% over February 2022.

The average monthly Load Factors (occupied seats per flight) was 72% in January 2022; 72% in February 2022 and 81% in March 2022. The average load factor for Q1 2022 was 75%. Traffic recovery compared to the same months in 2019 was 73% for January; 80% for February and 92% for March 2022. The overall Q1 22 recovery compared to Q1 19 was 82%.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects overall traveler numbers to reach 4.0 billion in 2024 exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels (103% of the 2019 total). Not all markets or market sectors are recovering at the same pace. IATA further expects that 2019 passenger numbers are forecast to be surpassed in 2023 for Central America (102%), followed by South America in 2024 (103%) and the Caribbean in 2025 (101%). The latest IATA forecast does not calculate the impact of the war in Ukraine.  Consumer confidence and economic activity are likely to be impacted even outside of Eastern Europe.

CAP is pleased with the positive Q1 22 results and anticipates the strong positive trend through Q2. CAP continues to pursue the further growth and diversification of its route network in partnership with the local tourism stakeholders. The destination will be adding approximately 33% in room inventory in the current year and requires additional seat capacity to meet the demand.

Curaçao International Airport receives ACI Airport Health Accreditation for the 2nd consecutive year

CAP’s continuous efforts awarded with important safety certification.

Willemstad, January 11, 2022 – It is with great pleasure that Management of Curaçao Airport Partners N.V. (CAP) received notification of our airport being awarded once again with the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Health Accreditation. For CAP this re-accreditation is an important milestone, especially as we globally continue to fight the ongoing pandemic with all the effects on the aviation industry.

CAP is extremely proud to see its continuous efforts to keep all personnel, passengers, visitors, and stakeholders safe, redound in such important accreditation. The organization has worked tirelessly to ensure a safe work, travel, and visit experience at all times.

“The process for this accreditation is an opportunity to continuously test the processes in order to ensure that the best possible practices of health and safety guidelines are provided throughout the daily operations. With the steady increase in air traffic to and from our island, we are more aware than ever on the importance of safety during these times. Each and every person must feel and be safe, and that is our number one priority. This accreditation is for the next 12 months, and we are committed to maintaining the level of safety and care throughout this year” said Mr. Norman Gómez, Managing Director of CAP.

This accreditation from the most important organization in the aviation and airport industry worldwide, serves as an important measuring tool for tourists visiting our island to feel safe during their travels as we continue to try to find a balance throughout the evolving pandemic.

“We look positively into the future and know the important role we play in the chain when it comes to the process of rebuilding and the fortification of the various economic pillars of our community. Our airport, one of the most important doorways of our island, is a safe place thanks to the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including our community. For that we are grateful. Together we shall overcome”, Mr. Gómez ended.

Successful 1st edition of the annual ‘Airport Safety & Security Week’

Willemstad, November 27, 2021  ̶  Curaçao Airport Partners proudly shares the successful completion of its first annual  Airport Safety & Security Week which took place from November 22, 2021 to November 26, 2021.

The goal of this week was to promote healthy and safe work practices and consequently a safer environment for not only employees, but also all stakeholders at the Airport. Of course, this results for a safer environment for all passengers and visitors as well.

The entire week was focused on creating more awareness on safety and security in and around the airport through an extensive program that consisted of presentations, dynamic workshops, live demos, and many more interactive learning and sharing activities to support this.

“This was our first annual Airport Safety & Security Week, and we are extremely happy with how this went. The interest was high, and our entire Airport community participated in the various workshops and demos. There was also a tailored presentation for press members, and we are glad to see how interested they were in the information provided and tour given on our Land and Airside”, said Norman Gómez, Managing Director of CAP.

“We invited experts in the field of Airport Security to share valuable information and provided different opportunities for participants to actively learn through live demonstrations”, Mr. Gómez continued.

The FOD Walk and ARFF challenge were the last activities on schedule to end this eventful week with a bang. The FOD Walk is a known activity during which employees and stakeholders at the Airport get together to help scan and clean the entire runway to remove any garbage/debris that might be a hazard for the safety of airplanes and vehicles on site. And of course, the Firefighter department is key player in the safety of our airport and thus demonstrations were given, ending with the exciting Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) challenge. Firefighters challenged each other in various tasks ̶   for sure educational and entertaining moments shared during that morning.

The team looks back on a fruitful week and already looks forward to next year’s Airport Safety & Security Week, which hopefully will be even bigger! We are sure we will count on the commitment of all employees and stakeholders at our airport.

Curaçao International Airport – Q4 and Year End Overview 2021

The long and winding road to recovery and stability.

Curaçao International Airport’s 2021 fourth quarter results were the highest since re-opening the borders for commercial passenger traffic in July 2020. The overall positive results over the second semester of 2021 were as anticipated by Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP). The impact of the pandemic and the virus mutations continue to influence the recovery and stabilization of CAP’s route network and passenger traffic. CAP therefor remains cautiously optimistic.

Departing Traffic during Q4 2021 continues to be driven by The Netherlands with a 58% traffic share; followed by the Caribbean 17%; USA 13% and South America 11%. Monthly traffic figures for Q4 21 indicate overall passenger traffic increased in October by +15% compared to September 2021. November traffic increased by +12% compared to October 2021 and December traffic increased by +20% over November 2021. (see graph 1)

The average monthly Load Factors (occupied seats per flight) was 80% in October 2021; 75% in November 2021 and 72% in December 2021. The average load factor for Q4 2021 was 76%.

Traffic recovery compared to the same months in 2019 was 90% for October; 94% for November and 90% for December 2021. With 338,766 passenger movements, an average Load Factor of 76%, an average recovery of 92%, Q4 2021 is the best performing quarter thus far since commercial passenger traffic restarted in July 2020. (see graph 2)

In comparing Q4 21 to Q3 21, overall passenger traffic grew from 285,676 to 338,766 passenger movements, an increase of +19%. Fall holidays in October, pend up travel demand, restart of air service from Canada and the United States, launch and increase of service from South America (Medellin, Bogota, Paramaribo and Panama) and a new gateway Brussels, Belgium added to the growth of traffic during the fourth quarter of 2021. However, the rapid rise of a new variant of the virus, Omicron, did have a negative impact on traffic figures in the second half of December 2021.

2021 in review

The pandemic fueled by two (2) variants, Delta in the beginning of the year and Omicron towards the end of 2021, reiterated that airline and airport business remain very volatile and unpredictable amidst recovery.

The rapid recovery from the increase of the Delta variant in Q2 2021 due to drastic government measures and a massive vaccination campaign at the end of March 2021 ensured the continuation of passenger traffic growth as of mid-May 2021 throughout the remainder of the year.

Curaçao International Airport YE 2021 traffic figures show total passenger movements at 830,145 compared to 548,000 YE 2020; a 52% increase over 2020. YE 2021 passenger traffic recovery compared to YE2019 was 57%. YE 2020 passenger traffic recovery compared to 2019 was 38%. According to Airports Council International (ACI), YE 2021 overall traffic recovery estimates for the airport industry will be between 45% and 55% compared to 2019.

Airlineweekly indicated that industry experts agree that this year’s pandemic pattern will govern the way airlines operate for the foreseeable future, as Covid-19 goes from being a pandemic to an endemic disease. New variants and outbreaks will occur, and airlines will adjust capacity and schedules in response to demand. A major difference between when the Delta and Omicron variants emerged, however, is the development and deployment of effective vaccines, which began at the end of 2020.

ACI latest 2021 passenger survey shows that 48% of respondents have travelled since the beginning of the pandemic. The survey suggests that respondents who have travelled during the pandemic are more likely to travel by air again sooner and more frequently. These observations highlight that, on returning to air travel, the journey feels safe and secure. In contrast, those that have not yet flown since the beginning of the crisis tend to be less confident as they have not yet experienced the changes that airports have implemented across the passenger journey. This issue is further intensified by the lack of harmonized measures across governments, particularly regarding international travel.

Q4 and YE 2021 results indicate that passenger traffic recovery remains highly dependent on the pandemic and virus mutations. In comparison to YE 2020, the severity of the pandemic on public health and the economy, was managed differently and more effectively by governments and health officials. In addition, aggressive vaccination campaigns including booster shots had positive effects on the demand for travel. CAP foresees recovery to remain volatile until traffic stabilizes and that depends on the continued impact of the pandemic, aircraft and crew availability and travel requirements. CAP continues to work closely with our tourism partners, CTB, CHATA and CASHA supporting efforts to further stimulate demand and growth of visitors to Curaçao.
